Insulation is extremely important for any commercial business, since it acts as a barrier against heat loss and heat gain. It is critical in roofs, ceilings, floors and walls and is the most effective method to ensure a building’s energy efficiency. Preventing cold and heat loss helps to maintain a consistent interior temperature and keeps your energy bills from fluctuating. A well-insulated building also provides a barrier against air pollution and road noise.
There is a wide gamut of efficiency and quality when it comes to correct insulation for your business. Insulation should have a high R-Value, which is the ability to resist heat flow.
Loose-fill is an economical option but doesn’t repel heat flow as well as higher grades. This can influence its ability to protect your building against moisture damage. R-Value for loose-fill can range from 2.2 to 3.8 per inch. Fiberglass, however, lacks density and is lightweight compared to other fills.
Cellulose has a much higher rating and performs extremely well in cold weather but can be heavy for unsupported attics. This type of loose-fill should be blown using a special machine, and while it can fill in negative spaces, it can settle over time.
Batts & Blankets is the most prevalent insulation used and is manufactured in large rolls of varying widths and thicknesses. R-Value ranges from 3.0 to 4.5, conditional on which material you use. Fiberglass is resistant to both settling and fire but can leave gaps that allow condensation and air to enter. It is fairly cost effective and can be layered onto existing insulation.
Cotton (“Blue Jeans”) and Rockwool are higher rated selections but can be costlier compared to alternatives. Typically made of recycled content, they are easy to install but can encourage mold growth if wet.
Insulated panels are expensive, however, they provide great energy savings. They are also excellent for insulating siding, or a newly constructed building.
Spray foam has fantastic R-Values (3.5 to 6.5) because of the barrier it creates in ceiling and walls. It also fills in most negative spaces and gaps.
